On July 27, 2018, KA Esuma Bunko's Twitter account announced that an anime adaptation of the novel would be produced, and would be animated by Kyoto Animation, but the project's status was unknown following the Kyoto Animation arson attack which destroyed the main production office.[4][5] An animated commercial titled Meiji-hen featuring the characters of the novels was released on July 8, 2021.[6] On October 25, 2025, Kyoto Animation announced at the "KyoAni no Sekai-ten" event that the anime will air on television in 2026.[1]

During the scriptwriting process, the staff decided to set the world in an alternate timeline where electricity barely developed and technology was steam-based in order to make the electrical gadgets and Kihachi's creativity more compelling. The staff didn't focus on strict historical accuracy when depicting Kyoto in the early 1900s as they wanted to present a "what-if" narrative, so they researched a timeframe of approximately ten years around the year the story is set in to create a chaotic image of Kyoto.[7]
